Fantastic idea! And a great reason to dress up and make a night of it.

Of course, I'm working late and suddenly realize that I had really better get myself ready for this shindig. I work from home, so at least I'm already home. But that seems to be the only thing in my favor.

Fortunately, I had laid out a dress the day before. To my horror it dawns on me that this little black dress and the very warm weather both necessitate the wearing of open toed shoes. I look down at my bare feet. The last pedicure I had been to was a hazy memory, and my feet looked liked the victims of some sort of unfortunate bleeding leprosy. I made a beeline for the bathroom to see what kind of damage control I could do.

At the aforementioned pedicure, I had chosen to have my toe nails painted a fun, and very highly pigmented, black cherry color. In several coats. It seemed like a good idea at the time. Now my toe nails looked like they had flesh colored potholes. I daubed at them with polish remover and realized that this stuff was not going to go away without a fight.

It was then that I turned to math as my friend. If my nails were more than 50% painted, I would attempt to fill in with polish. If they were LESS that 50% painted, I would try to pry the stuff off.

I realized that my big toes were completely polished and that I stood little chance of getting all that pigment off in one day. I decided to leave the big toes polished, and attempt to de-polish the other ones - Maybe it would look like a trendy fashion statement. At the very least, it would look intentional, and my toes wouldn't look like they were being eaten by a cherry red monster. And it was my only chance if I was to be ready on time.

I went to work. But it seemed that all I was doing was transferring a dark cherry red onto my fingers. Soon I looked like I had dipped my fingers in hot oil. Not good. This was going to take a lot of nail polish remover. And this is the same stuff about which my husband likes to say: "Doesn't that stuff eat your liver, like, while you watch??"

Still, I had no recourse, my fingers and my toes now BOTH looked like they were small bleeding appendages. I kept to the task. At which point, because I had spent so much time contorting myself to get this job done, I had the startling revelation that my knees were hairy! Yes.

Now, it was summer, so I had been pretty good, generally, about removing hair from my legs. But apparently I hadn't really paid close attention to my knees. How does hair even grow there? I mean, it's pretty much just skin over bone. I have no idea. I grabbed the epilating tool and started to fix this problem. The clock was ticking.

If you do not know, let me inform you that and epilator is a wonderful invention that basically grabs hair and yanks it out of your body. Unapologetically. As I can't shave without covering my body with scars and looking like Sally from Nightmare Before Christmas, I have had to resort to the joys of epilation. And by that I mean a million tiny tweezers searching for hairs and ripping them from the comfort and safety of their little follicle homes. Fun stuff.

Fortunately for me, I was so high from the fumes of the gallons of nail polish remover that I had used, that, well, let's just say that I was feeling no pain. A few dabs with a styptic pencil (yes, there is blood involved) and I was as good as new. And a little loopy. All I needed to do was throw on the dress, find a pair of sandals, earrings and a wrap, and I was good to go.

Oh, DAMN! There was no way that my brown mini-bag purse was going to go with this black on black outfit. I ran to the garage to find a black evening bag and ran back to throw just the essentials into it. Cell phone, ID, Credit Card, Lipstick. Check, Check, Check and Check. One minute left to go.

At which point, my husband wanders out of his office, and grabs a clean shirt. He changes shirts while walking to the bathroom. "Oh, darn," he says while looking in the bathroom mirror, "I should have shaved. Oh well, guess I'll just go for the rugged look. Are you ready?"

GRRRRRR.

karynhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03518412643413421481noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6504202906469129403.post-23999979616638065182011-06-28T18:27:00.001-07:002011-06-28T18:27:23.835-07:00we needed more room . . .
and stronger air-conditioning. so we went to coffee bean. together.
is there such a thing as too much togetherness???

karynhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03518412643413421481noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6504202906469129403.post-36879411633629335872011-06-28T13:30:00.001-07:002011-06-28T13:30:39.213-07:00Summer Vacay
Sam is on summer break. (If you don't know, he is a High School Math, and now Choir, teacher). That means he is home. We live in a small house. Only one room has air conditioning. I work from home. I had to finish an incredibly long and hard paper, and Sam had to work on his certification portfolio, while also rehearsing Zombie Prom and we BOTH were rehearsing for ELAC's theatre dedication gala event. Meanwhile, I had a birthday that I had to partially ignore so that I could finish my class work and rehearse, and then finally celebrate (until 3 am) when everything was over! Whew. In the meantime, wind is threatening to knock over our house. But it's Sunday afternoon and I think we're going to survive. . .
karynhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03518412643413421481noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6504202906469129403.post-63445906287497476802011-02-28T15:04:00.001-08:002011-02-28T15:04:02.442-08:00Update:In lieu of pithy statements about married life, or deep thoughts about . . . well, anything, I will make due with an up-date. Sam is more than half done with his Master's program. I will be starting Fuller's PhD program in fall. Sam is busy music directing Zombie Prom. We're both rehearsing for a little review-type show. And I run around trying to take care of us and my dad, along with working. And we have a rabbit who likes to plonk the loose wire of his rabbit cage for hours on end. . . karynhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03518412643413421481noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6504202906469129403.post-15036126203873089172011-02-28T14:54:00.001-08:002011-02-28T14:54:22.433-08:00Look! We had a bit of a crazy year, but I wanted to make sure the blog still was up and running, and once it is, I can post pictures and other fun stuff. See you soon! Anyhow, I promised to put everything that I learned from the wedding planning experience into ONE document, and I finally have at least a rough draft. My hope is that the next one of my friends to get married can learn from all the trial and error that I went through. =) We have some pictures back, which I will eventually post. Our photographers - AMAZING!!!! I can't say enough how totally totally thrilled I am with all the images that we have, it blows the mind. Even our proof book is over-the-top gorgeous.

Until I get all of that stuff up, here are some fun things that I learned: Sublingual Vitamin B Complex will totally help you grow a set of nails. (Mine used to always break before they could grow out - grr!) And Philosophy's Supernatural Tinted Moisturizer is also amazing.

Another thing I learned: You will get wedding presents after the wedding. Sometimes WAY after. Be sure to save some thank-you cards for the random presents that come later.

Now, back to clearing out the house for the upcoming garage sale (and so that I can move my stuff in)! We have about 20 boxes so far - yay! (what I did with my memorial day weekend!)
karynhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03518412643413421481noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6504202906469129403.post-23515998686516857812009-11-03T15:30:00.001-08:002009-11-03T15:30:30.582-08:00and the story continues. . . .I’ll be posting pictures from the wedding as I get them in. Andrew has a well developed appreciation for good food, really appreciates his friends, and likes to keep everyone connected. He currently lives in the Bay Area, so we don't get to see him as often as we'd like, but when we do see him, he always makes us happy!

Reggie DeLeon - Sam and Reggie played brothers in Thoroughly Modern Millie last year, and Reggie has been a great friend ever since! Reggie also has a well developed appreciation for good food, really appreciates his friends and likes to keep everyone connected. Reggie appreciates a good Game Night, always knows some place fun to go for dinner or dessert, and he happens to be responsible for increasing Sam's Coldstone Creamery consumption. Reggie also has an adorable dog named Boo.

Joaquin Nunez - I can't remember what show Joaquin and Sam first did together, but I know they have been in Forever Plaid, Something's Afoot, and many others, along with being fellow Christmas carolers. Joaquin also really appreciates a good Game Night, and is always sure to have a funny story, finished with his trademark smile. We also know JQ to be a great listener and sympathetic ear, who works hard and really appreciates an excellent beer after a long day.

Jeff Eastridge - I don't know when Sam and Jeff first met, but I know it was before I met Sam. =) Jeff and Sam have lots in common as they are both high school teachers, both musicians, and both love to go to Disneyland after a long week at work. Jeff also happens to be an amazing gourmet cook, whom we hope will continue to feed us after we are married. (especially since sam and i know how to make about 3 dishes between us =) )

Benny Mao - Benny just happens to share something that no one else does with Sam - an address! Besides being a roommate, Benny is also a fellow musician and song-writer who can sometimes be seen doing solo gigs (www.bennymao.com), is always super-supportive of our creative ventures, knows where all the best food in Monterey Park is, and can always be counted on to read things that are written in Chinese for us.

I'm sure I left a TON of stuff out, and some of this may not even be 100% accurate, I may have even misspelled someone's name - but, I did my best, and at least the guys are represented. =)

karynhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03518412643413421481noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6504202906469129403.post-10639705660397262932009-08-21T18:28:00.000-07:002009-08-21T18:30:38.655-07:00Who are these people - Part 1
Also known As, the bridal party roll-call!

I always think it's nice to kind of know something about those people standing up on stage in the matching clothing. So I thought I'd give a quick run-down on the Bridal Party and how we know them. I'll start with the Ladies:
Paula Joe, Maid of Honor and all-around amazing woman --
I've known Paula since I think I was 15 or 16. In fact, Paula was in the group of about 8 friends that I went to my Senior Prom with, even though she didn't go to my school, but went to our rival, Alhambra High! It just so happens that we both also went to Cal Poly Pomona and I remember many happy visits from Paula to my dorm in Palmitas Hall!
Emily Tokeshi, Bridesmaid and Fellow Book Lover --
Emily also went to Cal Poly Pomona, and also to Fuller, so we have much in common academically. We also share a passion for books, fond memories of many road trips, and an appreciation for our introverted natures. Emily was one of the people who helped me move to Colorado when I worked out there, and I will never forget our near-death experiences sliding out during a blizzard in the mountain pass near Moab, Utah.
Anna Kwan, Bridesmaid and Fellow Beach Lover --
I've known Anna as long as I've known Emily and Paula (Anna's cousin). I have happy memories of lying on the beach in Newport during the days when Anna was living on campus at UCI, of eating at Sushi of Napels, and of getting our gym membership at Bally's and working out at Jason's Step Aerobics class (oooh so 90's, I know!!)
Vivian Ling, Bridesmaid and former Housemate --
I've forgotten how many years I lived with Vivian, but I will NEVER forget our first dog, Milo, and how heartbroken we both were when we lost her. I also fondly recall Vivian's famous HotPot (yum), staying up waaaayyy too late talking when we both had to work the next day, and hosting happy (and highly decorated) holiday parties over the years.
Marianne Fritz, Bridesmaid and Stage Sister --
I first got to know Marianne because she played my sister in Proof. Our chemistry in that show could not have been just an act, because she has felt like a sister ever since. She shares my passion for theatre, whether performing, writing, reading, or watching it, an appreciation for Sondheim, and an appreciation of the importance of an excellent (and cold) beer after a long day.
Stephenie Sun - Candlelighter and Event Planner Extaordinaire --
Sam and I met Steph after she moved down here from Portland for a teaching program. We will always remember her first teaching year! Steph has been super supportive of all of my (and Sam's) creative ventures, is a great Disneyland buddy, and shares my excitement over an Excel spreadsheet. I will never forget our life-altering PacificNorthWest Trip, or Steph's hometown. Steph is also helping us to plan this crazy wedding event, and we owe her our sanity!
Naomi Shiraiwa/Peng - Candlelighter and Bride-to-Be buddy --
I have been ever-so-grateful to be going through this whole engagement process with a friend who is just a few steps ahead of me! This whole year I have been able to share the joys and freak-out moments of the engagement journey with Naomi, and have been the recipient of her constant encouragement and very sympathetic ear.

Whew!! I made it though all the girls, hopefully some day soon we can get all the guys in here too! Check back, we'll try to continue posting. Between other wedding planning insanity. =)
happily,
karyn.
karynhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03518412643413421481noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6504202906469129403.post-73041311137936656222009-08-21T18:16:00.000-07:002009-08-21T18:28:27.625-07:00why i love sam, reason #53one night during the wedding planning madness, sam and i sat down and tried to plan out the actual ceremony (who know a ceremony had so many parts?) and it all went rather smoothly. but, when it came to the wedding recessional, Sam and I didn't exactly see eye to eye. for the past few years, i've pictured myself exiting down the the aisle and rocking out to "elevation" by u2. sam, ever the classic type, imagined the excitement of trumpet voluntary. both of us, being rather passionate about music, really wanted to stand our ground. and so we were at an impasse, it would seem. we decided to shelve the issue for the time being, and i told sam that i'd send him the mp3 and asked him to listen to it just to see what he thought.
what he thought, it turns out, was something i never would have thought of. he managed to blend the songs into a medley and put in all the other music that makes us feel happy and elated. and so what we have is what we both want, and something totally unique as well. leave it to sam to find a way to think outside of the box and come up with a win-win situation. which, happens to be one of the reasons why i'm marrying him. =)
karynhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03518412643413421481noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6504202906469129403.post-89639977866717797732009-08-20T00:35:00.000-07:002009-08-21T19:04:10.666-07:00Who Are These People? Here I will be posting information about the wedding party.
